Homemade Butter chicken Handi is so creamy, rich, and delicious that it has captured the hearts and taste buds of my entire family.

My journey with this magical treat began when my husband and kids fell incredibly in love with it, and I found myself ordering it at our favorite restaurants all the time.

Our craving for creamy butter chicken never ended, however, and it began to be part of our monthly budget. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

I soon realized that making my homemade butter chicken would not only help us save money but also become a collective tradition in our family.

Well, today I am going to share with you my delicious budget recipe for homemade butter chicken so that you too can enjoy this dish with your loved ones.

Ingredients for Homemade Butter Chicken Handi:

  • Boneless chicken: 1 kg
  • Plain yogurt: 1 cup
  • Lemon juice: 2 tbsp.
  • Ginger-garlic paste: 2 tsp
  • Cumin powder: 1 tbsp.
  • Coriander powder: 1 tbsp.
  • Turmeric extract: 1/2 tsp
  • Red pepper powder (adjust to taste): 1/2 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Butter: 3 tbsp.
  • Onion, finely chopped: 1 large
  • Mashed tomatoes: 1 cup
  • Fresh/packaged cream: 1/2 cup
  • Garam masala: 1 tbsp.
  • Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish

Instructions:

Marinate the chicken.

  • Cut the chicken into small pieces.
  • Take a bowl and whisk together yogurt, lemon juice, ginger-garlic paste, cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt.
  • Dip the chicken pieces into the marinade and make sure they are all well covered.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (even better overnight).

Cook the chicken

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of butter.
  • Now, add the marinated boneless chicken pieces and cook until they are browned and cooked completely.
  • Set aside.

Prepare the Sauce:

  • Add the left-over 1 tablespoon of butter to the same pan.
  • Then, add the finely chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent.
  • Stir in the tomato puree and cook for almost 5 minutes, or until the oil starts to separate from the sauce.
  • Lower the heat and add the fresh or packaged cream, garam masala, and a pinch of salt. Cook for another 5 minutes.

Combine Chicken and Sauce:

  • Add the cooked chicken pieces to the sauce and mix well.
  • Let it cook for an extra 10–15 minutes, letting the flavors combine and the sauce thicken.

Serve and Enjoy:

  • Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves.
  • Serve your homemade creamy butter chicken with boiled rice or hot, fresh naan.

Making homemade butter chicken handi for the first time, the sweet smell spreading in my kitchen reminded me of the little restaurant where we loved this dish. The aroma drew my kids into the kitchen, and they looked inside.

When they finally picked up the lid of the dish, their eyes lit up with pleasure, and they couldn’t believe it was handmade. We had dinner together, made sweet family memories, and my husband loved it just as much.

Since then, eating homemade butter chicken has become a tradition in our house. Besides being more expensive than eating out, the kitchen also gives us the chance to spend quality time together, enjoying the fruits of our labor.
